leap year rant

It has been two years since I last visit this blog, do I thought I would give it a jolt to bring it back to life.
Yesterday was 29 Feb, the mark of yet another leap year.
To me, every leap year has a very significant meaning to me; it marks the highs and lows of my life.
Back then in 2004, two leap years ago, was probably the darkest point of my life.
I repeated my secondary three academic year, something that nobody would have believed coming from someone with a PSLE aggregate of 263.
Yes. I had fucked up my secondary school life pretty bad, with reasons that I would prefer not to disclose here.
I hated my school. I really hated it. The system, the teachers, the bullies.

2008 I entered another leap year.
It was the year whereby I was rudely slapped awake.
Just the year before, I had achieved a feat that no other person had ever achieved.
I have gotten myself in the repeat list again.
Amazed by how I had managed to squeeze into a jc with almost non existent studying for my o levels, I took things for granted and tried to pull the same stunt again.
It backfired petty badly.
After all, A levels is called Advanced levels for a good reason.
Since then, on year 2008, I had sworn to myself never to slack off again.
I did my tutorials.
I did not fall asleep in class.
My peers copied my work instead.
I pay attention in lectures.

So here I am.
Year 2012.
Waiting for university admission.
I'll be back with a bang.
I may have lag behind and wasted two years.
But I'll be back.
I'll prove those who had looked down on me, including my parents, that I'll earn enough money to slap their faces with it.
I'll pray hard those who had victimized a then frail and sickly boy that karma is a bitch.
I'll prove that teacher who had once asked the boy to not rot in her class that she is the real rotten one, to have been unable to differentiate a distressed student with Tourette syndrome, with someone whom she had felt was just attention seeking then.

Next week is gonna be an eventful one.
Real work will commence, thats when time will start flying pass at a relatively faster pace. (well time can't exactly speed up, its just the feeling of it speeding up.)

Ooooh. Haven't been updating for quite some time.
Not that anyone will read anyways.
Haha.
But the sake of keeping a digital record for the future generation, I'll update a bit anyways. :)
I've probably got myself in the coolest and most wonderful vocation one can ever find in their two years of ns life.
I'm a counselling assistant, working under the saf counselling centre.
Doesn't sound like an army vocation right? Haha.
Due to the partially sensitive nature of my job scope, I'll only briefly summarize my duties.
In short, i'm like a personal assistant/secretary to the counsellors in the SCC.
We assist them in scheduling appt dates with their clients, calling up those who skipped sessions, etc.
We call big shots to arrange selection interviews for courses conducted by one of our sub-branch.
We do a lot of admin and ad-hoc tasks. Including paper shredding.
Yes. Paper shredding. :)
We will learn basic counselling skills, hotline skills, man the 24-hour hotline as night duty, do reception, etc.
Hmm. I think thats basically a rough summary of what we do there.
Its quite interesting luh, getting to liase with people from all walks of life.
For guys who find this vocation interesting, there's a piece of advice of you all.
Study harder.

I simply love travelling alone.
Went out today to do some shooting, cos the sky looks pretty blue.
But when I reached City Hall that time, the sky sudden became extraordinarily cloudy.
It totally spoilt my shooting mood. T.T
There's no way i can get good shots in such a gloomy weather.
Anyways, went to Bugis after that, to look for the building which housed the Japanese Cultural Society Singapore.
At first I was quite hesitant when I took the lift up the building, cos it doesn't seem as if a society could fit in there.
But when the lift door opened at the 3rd floor, my doubts vanished.
A lady donning a kimono entered the lift. =)
The lift went up to the fifth floor, where the actual place is.
The 3rd floor mentioned earlier housed the society's library.
Anyways, my mind is almost set.
Given my Pes status, i would probably be given a clerical position in army after my PoP.
I would use the night to attend japanese language classes then. =)
After i left the building it started to drizzle.
Wanted to head for home, but I subconsciously took the train that heads toward Changi airport, and I alighted at payar lebar.
I walked about randomly, and for the first time, I stepped into Geylang.
It was really accidental.
Anyways, it was really an eye opener for me.
There are really lots of eateries there, selling duck tongue, porridge, etc.
And not to mention, hotels, and shops selling, ehem, sex toys.
Surprisingly, there ain't much hookers on the streets as I thought.
I supposed the relevant authorities must have clamped down hard on them.
Haha, one thing to note though, the old uncles sitting around coffee shops keep staring at me as I walked pass.
I supposed they thought I was there for a purpose, like they do. =X

Was browsing through the web for JPLT related info, and realise that there is a japanese cultural society in Singapore.

Might be going down to Middle Road there to ask for more course info =)

And whoa, in order to finish all the 4 JLPT levels, it is estimated to take 5 solid years.

Think at most can finish N4 and N3 during this 2 years nia =/

N4, being the most elementary level, requires about 150 hours of study, while N1, being the most advanced level, need 900 hours of studying to complete o.0

Kinda wished that I didn't drop 3rd language last time =X

Went to Ntu and Sim open house today with Hg and Jy.
Ntu is like, damn huge la.
Took a while to find the LT19A for the humanities talk, but left after the Econs talk.
Went to the Nie and Moe teaching as a career talk in LT8 after that.
The speaker, Benjamin Lim, is damn good sia.
He is humorous, charismatic, and lastly, very good looking.
And he looks like Wang Lee Hom and Wilber Pan hybrid.
The girls sitting in front of me were like, more interested in him than the actual talk itself.
Anyways, the short video clip which they played after that left me close to tears.
Its very inspirational, and touching.
Anyways, didn't have time to tour the campus after that.
One random fact about ntu is that, it actually has its one TCM clinic! Haha.
Went for lunch at Jurong Point, and went for the Sim open house at Clementi after that.

Oh ya.
Innova jc's Econs seems to be incredibly strong.
I'm not that sure about H1, but so far from the schoolmates that i know, a large number got an A for H2 Econs.
This is despite universal complaints about how hard the paper was.
If i didn't see wrongly, when the results were flashed on the screen ysd, i think 52% of our sch achieved either A or B for H2 econs, which is really splendid.
We really do have a team of dedicated tutors here.
So for new jc1s who just joined us this year, don't regret your decisions in coming ijc!!
Play your part in being a good student and your tutors will do the rest for you :)
P.S.: Mdm Lim you are really great! I heard from Mdm Chan that half of our class clinched an A for Econs:)

Heh. Now i'm cross-trained in both postcall procedures and IIT call centre stuff.
But having to keep alternating between postcall work and frontline is really sibei sian.
I can never get sufficient experience as compared to others in dealing with calls.
Anyways Thursday was not a very good day for me.
Despite only being transferred to frontline for the last 1 hour of the day, the 2/3 calls that recieved wasn't that nice.
There's this angmoh whose accent i could hardly decipher.
Ended up having to ask him to repeat himself a few times, which is a great taboo here.
That's not the worst.
The last call that concluded my day was the real nasty one.
Apparently tax agents have the uncanny flair to make things difficult to us officers.
This dear tax agent in this story here was calling on behalf of her client, who is a foreigner.
In the first place, her client's class code is classified under Clearance(meaning like foreigners who worked here and are leaving sg soon i think. I'm not trained in this so i'm not sure), and not INDV-TP (individual taxpayer, referring to the common you and me who are employees in general).
So i dunno for fuck she go and choose the individual income tax line for.
A series of unpleasant stuff followed, which i found it hard to put to words here.
I mean, i thought a tax agent should be at least clear of what she was dealing with?
I alr told her i'm not the right person to assist her and request if she needs me to do a transfer of her line over to the clearance dept, and yet she kick up a big hooha.
But anyways, its over alr.
Asking me for my name isn't going to make me shit in my pants and my knees turning jelly =)

Finally the whole A level saga is over.
To conclude, my results exceeds my own expectations.
Well, my expectations weren't high to speak of in the first place.
Here goes my results:
-A for H2 Econs.
-A for H2 Math
-C for H2 Geog (a bit disappointing, but my Econs balanced it off =D)
-C for H1 Eng Lit (omgwtfbbq! Those who know me knows that i abhor lit and had never passed lit before in my whole life, not to say a C. This really made my day.)
-D for GP. (What else can i say. So much so for dozing off frequently during GP tutorials. I supposed i deserved it =X )
To sum up, i'm alr very contented with my current grades on the whole:)
Although i had hoped for a B for geog, but there's no use crying over spilt milk.
I had anticipated a poor grade for Econs, since I did not complete my micro question, but I still ended up with an A anyways.
So i reckon it sort of offset the disappointment:)
As for Math, i was expecting an A, and i really got it:)
Yes, this may seem crappy as compared to ppl from the good jcs, but at least I didn't study like 12 hours a day for these.

I endured 3 weeks in IRAS!!!

Officially working now, in the post-call dept.

Not my choice, realy, its not my choice.

But I had to leave earlier due to enlistment, so I cant stay until 18th April, which is the last day of the peak-filing period.

Hence no frontline for me =(

Okay, so this is my job scope.

I do admin stuff like the updating of taxpayers' addresses, whenever they called the frontline ppl to request of a change of their current mailing address.

I do the issuing of income tax forms, for taxpayers who realise they need to file their income for the Year of Assessment 2010.

I listen to voicemail messages left by busy taxpayers, so that we can call them back.

Its a rather easy task, in short, and is very very repetitive.

So one gets very bored after a short while.

I would really rather be posted to the frontline =(

How much I miss my colleagues who are working at the frontline currently =X

First day of work!
Hahas. I still thought i wouldn't hit the books in the coming 2 years.
But end up still needing to study during the training duration of my job.
I came to realise that what we learn in school is actually very applicable in the workplace.
Like analytical skills we learn in economics, memorizing skills we learn in geography, calculations and critical thinking skills in mathematics.
Anyways, i hope i will enjoy my 2 months of working experience in iras in the days to come, especially with a cute and pretty girl as my colleague :)

chinese new year is coming.
Its seems to all happen in a blink of an
eye.
Whatever it is, leave the sad past
behind and embrace the new year.
I seriously hope that this year will be a
much better year.
The year 2009 had been a rather
unpleasant one.
Having to attend 3 funerals in a matter
of four months was something that I
doubt most ppl do not experience in
their lifetime.
To recap, my maternal youngest aunt
passed away in August last year, due to
cancer.
When she went for a body checkup in
around March/April, its too late as her
cancer was in the final stage.
Chemotherapy and everything only
made her weaker, I can say.
Following that, in the month of
september, my maternal grandmother,
(mother of the aunt mentioned earlier)
passed away as well.
She had a fall and passed away two
weeks later.
Some said that it was grief.
And something else happened in dec
that I have not mentioned in this blog
before.
My maternal(yes, again.) grandfather
left the world as well, in december.
His death was the most unpredictable
of all.
My mum had a phonecall with him in
the afternoon and he left at night, at
about 8.30pm.
Without any pre-emptive symptoms at
all.
And the poor thing is, my cousin(eldest
daughter of my smallest uncle, but
only in pri sch), had to witness him
closing his eyes on the chair he always
sit on and losing consciousness.
The weird thing is, she could feel
something was wrong, and it was
different from the action of dozing off
and she shook him.
To no avail.
The next day we were back in Malaysia
again.

Just a brief update of what I've been doing this few months.
Oh yeah, playing computer games like the world is ending the next day.
Anyways, i'm starting work at IRAS(finally, they took one month to get back to me), and to my understanding, its some indian mama job.
No idea whats that?
Its call centre. Geog students should know best since call centres jobs are frequently outsourced to India:)
If it suits me I will work till my enlistment on 12th April.

When old school mates or classmates that you are not very familiar with suddenly tries to become very warm towards you, its best to be on your guard.
They almost everytime wants a favour from you.
2 years back, I've an ex secondary school classmate who i've known for only one year(he retained after that year we were in the same class, hence) suddenly became very friendly towards me. Called and asked about my academia, etc.
Not too long after that, he started revealing his ulterior motives. It happens that he was doing some multilevel marketing stuff under sunshine empire(ho&ha), and he was trying to get me to join.
I wasn't much bothered though, even though he was quoting to me the high returns he got from some wireless network investment in Taiwan or whatsoever.
After my display of utmost uninterestedness, we lost contact. Or to better paraphrase, he stopped bugging me.
Perhaps thats why i'm quite weary towards old schoolmates who suddenly become very friendly.
Thats what happened recently too, when another ex schoolmate whom i met on the mrt a few months ago asked for my number.
Was puzzled that time, cos we were never from the same class.
During the A levels/preparation period he was like calling to ask about my preparation progress and everything.
After my As, its was again revealed that he needs ppl to join some project which can earn money. I expressed my unwillingness to participate but he persisted. I rejected calls after that.
I hate ppl with ulterior motives and those who don't make their point clear beforehand. Can't they stop beating around the bush? It would save a lot of precious time for both sides though.

At least the H2 geog paper 2 was alright today.
Mrs Siva is godlike sia. Transport really did come out. :)
At least it compensated (to some extent) the losses made in paper 1.
Loved the fieldwork technique question for drq. But sian la, didn't download the notes on fieldwork techniques posted up by siva on mlg; luckily yong kang lend me skim through it today morning. If not i'm screwed.
Anyways, really must thank siva for working so hard for our class. We seldom find tutors that are willing to back in sch until 7+ to impart her knowledge:) I don't know what will the results turn out to be, but still a big thanks to mrs siva, if you happen to read this :)

Cambridge is damn weird this year. I'm surprised that no questions on the macroeconomic goals and policies came out. Question 1 was hard, and i din finish this question anyways. I think the question on the circular flow of income was still alrights, although i focused more on the size than the openness of the economies. Part b was alright also.
Question 6, i chose it because i din want to do question 5. But shit, i din bring in the theory of comparative advantage, which was like the main concept behind international trade. Talked on free trade instead, and the reasons for globalization such as increase variety of goods and services, mobility of labour and increased capital flows etc. Part b is like o.0. But anyways, its over alr. Confirm no A alr, don't think got B also. So screwed la.

The 2nd funeral I had attended in the month of August.

First, it was my small aunt.

And exactly a week ago, my grandmother passed away in Malaysia.

Was back in Singapore only by tuesday evening.

TOKYO, JAPAN - Loyalty, faithfulness and unconditional love are qualities that have earned dogs the title of "man's best friend". One particular Akita dog took these qualities to such an extreme, he has earned a place in the hearts of all Japanese people, and has kept that place for over sixty years!

Hachiko, Japan's most Faithful Dog, TokyoNestled amid hoards of harried commuters, a variety of shops and department stores, and a giant television screen that covers half a skyscraper, a life sized bronze statue of a dog can be found at Tokyo's busy Shibuya Train Station. Despite the diminutive size of the statue in comparison to the massive neon flash of the city, it isn't difficult to find. Millions of Tokyoites have been meeting at the landmark since 1934 and continue to do so today.

Chu-ken Hachiko (lit. the faithful dog Hachiko) was born in Akita in 1923 and was first brought to Tokyo in 1924. He and his owner, Mr. Eisaburo Uyeno, were inseparable friends right from the start. Each day "Hachi" would accompany Eisaburo, a professor at the Imperial University, to the train station when he left for work. Upon returning, the professor would find the dog patiently waiting, tail wagging. This happy routine continued until one fateful day in 1925, when the professor was taken ill on the job and unfortunately died before he could return home.

Despite the fact that Hachiko was less than two years old at the time, the bond between dog and owner was strong. Hachiko continued to wait each day at Shibuya station for a friend who was never coming back. At times, he wouldn't return home for days at a stretch.

The Akita became a familiar sight to commuters as he kept his vigil for over ten years. On March 8, 1935, Hachiko finally went to meet his master. He died on the very same spot he last saw his friend alive.
